ESSENTIAL IN SURVIVOR SAFETY WHEN SURVIVORS LEAVE. IT CAN BE A VERY DANGEROUS TIME THAT DANGER CAN ONLY BE MADE WORSE WHEN A GUN IS INVOLVED. THAT’S WHY A FEDERAL LAW THAT WAS PASSED IN 1994 DOESN’T ALLOW PEOPLE THAT ARE SUBJECT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RESTRAINING ORDERS TO HAVE GUNS. THESE ORDERS OF PROTECTION HAVE A LOT OF GUARDRAILS THAT IT’S THEY’RE NOT EASY TO GET. BUT THAT THEY’RE VITAL. THEY’RE A VITAL TOOL FOR SURVIVORS TO BE SAFER. TODAY, THE SUPREME COURT HEARD ARGUMENTS IN A CASE TO OVERTURN THAT LAW FILED BY A MAN WHOSE GIRLFRIEND GOT A RESTRAINING ORDER AGAINST HIM, WHO WAS LATER CONVICTED OF POSSESSING FIREARMS. HE SAID THAT VIOLATED HIS SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS. THE ADVOCACY COMMUNITY IS ON PINS AND NEEDLES. WE KNOW THAT THERE’S A LOT OF LEGAL ARGUMENTS THAT GO INTO THE SUPREME COURT CASES, BUT WHAT’S ON THE LINE ARE LIVES. TAKING A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS HERE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, THERE HAVE BEEN 24 INTIMATE PARTNER HOMICIDES THE LAST FOUR YEARS. SO FAR THIS YEAR, THERE HAVE BEEN SIX AND MANY CASES INVOLVED GUNS. ADVOCATES SAY NOW MORE THAN EVER, IT’S IMPORTANT FOR VICTIMS TO KNOW THEY ARE SUPPORTED AND THE HELP IS OUT THERE. WHEN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ABUSERS THREATEN FURTHER VIOLENCE. WE NEED TO TAKE THAT SERIOUSLY. THEY OFTEN MAKE GOOD ON THEIR THREATS AS AND WE DO HAVE LINKS AND RESOURCES FOR ANYONE THAT MAY BE EXPERIENCE BEING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. IN THIS STORY ON OUR WEBSITE. AS FOR THAT RULING, IT’S EXPECTED TO BE OUT BY EARLY
