In our latest Saving Our Streets report, WESH 2’s Marlei Martinez tells us about Darnellion Brown and his mission to help dads and kids in our community:Darnellion Brown’s life changed when he had his son, Darwin. Brown was one of eight siblings and his mother raised them all on her own. Now as a dad himself, Brown is building himself into the father he wants to be. “I feel like it’s my calling,” Brown said. Brown is the fatherhood coordinator for Orange County Head Start’s 24/7 Dad program where he leads weekly meetings with other dads focused on relationships, self-awareness and self-care. “It gives us the outlook on life really,” Brown said. “It’s like a cheat book to get your fathering skills up to date. So I love it.”October marks Head Start Awareness Month, and Brown was chosen as the organization’s Father of the Year out of the whole state.“Honestly when I got the call, I had to put it on mute because I was excited. But then I gave God all the glory,” he said. “It makes me feel good when I can help somebody without really giving them money, but give them knowledge or help in different type of ways.”Brown grew up in Parramore as a Head Start student himself. Now, he is doing what he can to not only give his son a head start, but his community too. “It’ll educate dads to know what it really means to be a man first off and then a father. So I think it’s definitely needed,” he said.
