Tighter security in downtown Orlando for Halloween 2023

Tuesday marks the first Halloween since a new permit was put in place for bars selling alcohol past midnight. Some who were out celebrating the holiday said they had definitely seen tighter security in the last few months. Others hadn’t noticed. “I really don’t even know,” Tricia Davis said. “I don’t go in; I just walk through.”The new permit requires things like metal detectors, ID scanners and added security. “Now they, like, check your bag like super thoroughly,” said Addy Hudson, who has noticed the changes. “They’re just looking for knives, weapons. They didn’t use to do that before. And then, like, the metal scanners and stuff.”When asked if they had any plans for added patrols this Halloween, the Orlando Police Department said they wouldn’t give any specifics. But said, “Whether security measures are visible or not, officers are always working on the streets and behind the scenes to ensure the safety of our city.”Some businesses seemed to be taking different steps this Tuesday due to their costumed customers. “Something new they added is anyone with a mask, they will take the mask off to make the person with the mask take the mask off to ensure that the camera sees the person with the mask,” said Matthew Workman, who was downtown celebrating Halloween. “I really appreciate that. Because there’s been scenarios not just in Orlando but in other places where they can’t identify the person or suspect due to them having something on them.”As far as who makes sure businesses are following these new regulations, that falls to code enforcement and the fire marshal.
