New mayor

Rome has a new mayor, Virginia Raggi of the anti-corruption Five Star Movement (M5S). Ms Raggi won a resounding victory in Sunday’s runoff election, taking 67.2% of the vote. Her main rival, Roberto Giachetti of the governing Democratic Party (PD), received 32.8%.


Florence is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany and of the Metropolitan City of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany, with 383,084 inhabitants in 2013, and over 1,520,000 in its metropolitan area.

New art museum

The opening of a new art museum is always an event, but when the museum is Florence’s long-awaited Museo del Novecento, the interest is amplified. The Museo del Novecento (Museum of the 20th Century) finally opened its doors to the public on December 10, 2010, over a decade after the project was first announced.

The permanent collection of the Museo del Novecento spans the entire history of 20th-century Italian art, from Giovanni Boldini’s portraits of high society women to Pier Paolo Calzolari’s installations with live animals. In between are major works by Giorgio de Chirico, Marino Marini, Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, and countless others.


The Latest News in Italy is that a large cruise ship has slammed into a dock and a tourist boat in Venice. The crash sent a large wave crashing into the city, flooding streets and knocking over pedestrians. The incident is currently under investigation.
