The Ministry of Civil Aviation is mulling over starting Vande Bharat flights to nine more countries from India including the US, UK, Canada and Singapore amid the Covid-19 pandemic, according to three people familiar with the development.

The national carrier Air India and its subsidiary Alliance Air are currently operating Vande Bharat flights to 34 countries.

The current situation of international flights in India

Presently, there are no international flights operating in India. This is due to the outbreak of COVID-19 which has resulted in a travel ban. The situation is being monitored by the government and an announcement will be made soon.

Why are international flights not operating in India?

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in widespread disruption of air travel globally. India too has been hit hard, with a complete suspension of international flights since March 2020.

The reasons for this are twofold – firstly, due to the nature of the virus, global travel restrictions were put in place in an attempt to contain its spread. India was no different in this regard, and suspended all incoming international passenger flights on 22 March 2020 itself.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly from the perspective of resuming flights, is the fact that the Indian government has so far been unwilling to extend any financial support to airlines operating within the country. This is in contrast to other major aviation markets such as the US and European Union, where governments have provided substantial bailouts to their respective airlines.

As a result of these factors, airlines have been struggling to stay afloat, with many resorting to layoffs and pay cuts. In such a scenario, it is unlikely that they will be able to restart operations anytime soon without some sort of government assistance.

What are the possible solutions?

The situation of international flights in India is ever-changing. The government has not yet released a definitive answer as to when international flights will resume. However, there are some potential solutions that may help ease the process.

One option is to fly domestic airlines to nearby countries, such as Nepal or Sri Lanka, and then take an international flight from there. This could be a lengthy and expensive process, but it may be the only option for those who need to travel urgently.

Another solution is to wait for the government to lift the ban on international flights. This is unlikely to happen in the near future, but it is possible that it will happen eventually. In the meantime, it is important to stay up-to-date on the latest information so that you can make informed decisions about your travel plans.

When will international flights start in India?

International flights were halted in India on March 22 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country has been gradually opening up since then and domestic flights have resumed. So, when will international flights start in India? let’s find out.

When will the government allow it?

The Civil Aviation Ministry is awaiting the green signal from the Home Ministry to resume international flights, Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday. The decision will be taken after taking into account the situation of COVID-19 in India and abroad, he added.

“We are awaiting permission from the ministry of home affairs (MHA). The moment we get it, we will take a decision,” Mr Puri told reporters at a press conference.

The MHA is expected to give its nod to resume international flights by August-end or early September, sources in the civil aviation ministry had told NDTV earlier.

When will airlines resume their services?

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has not announced any timeline for the resumption of international flights.

Airlines have been asked to schedule their flights and crew in such a way that they are able to resume operations at short notice.

The civil aviation ministry had earlier said that it was working on a proposal to start limited international flights under the Vande Bharat Mission in a phased manner.

However, no decision has been taken on when these flights will start.

The Vande Bharat Mission was launched by the government in May to bring back Indian citizens stranded abroad due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
